Good Things To Know

The Seasons

We are located in the coastal mountain range which means our weather differs somewhat from what you would find on the valley floor in places like Santa Rosa or Healdsburg.

In the winter, we get lots of rain - up to 60 inches - which turns out to be great for vegetation year round as well as helping to reduce possible forest fires later in the year. In the summer, it can be quite hot during the day - in the 90's, and 100's in August and September. Plenty of sunscreen is in order. Thankfully, our nights are always cool and make for comfortable sleeping. Our springs are gorgeous, can be wet or quite warm, it's not easy to predict. Fall is warm and dry with the spectacular change of colors.

Critters

Being in the country, we have the normal amount of critters to be aware of - ticks, snakes, mosquitos, bees, wasps and wild animals.

We have normal garden variety snakes as well as rattlesnakes. You need to be aware while taking hikes - "step on logs and rocks, never over them..." Rattlesnake season is March through October.

Poison Oak

You will encounter poison oak while hiking- especially near creeks where it can grow rather lush.

First Aid

The Ranch has a substantial first-aid kit in case of a minor emergency. We do not carry the bee venom kit, so please bring that if you are allergic. In case of major emergencies, we are 45 minutes from the nearest hospital.

Fire

Fire obviously is a huge threat to a lush vegetative zone and an old wooden house like ours in the hot summer months. Precautions needs to be taken to try to minimize fire danger. We ask that you don't smoke on the property or burn candles.

Roads and Driving

The road to the Ranch is one of the nicest driving roads around. It is however, full of curves, very fast weekend motorcyclists and the occasional wild animal - deer, raccoon, fox, etc. Please be careful and stay aware.

There are no gas stations within 30 miles.
